Projection changes the grip even at the same outer size

Hickory Hardware's square Crest and square Dover knobs both measure 1.25 inches across. Crest projects 1 inch from the face, while Dover projects 1.25 inches. Maker dimensions, materials and finishes describe the knobs, leaving finger clearance, surface wear and mounting strength unevaluated. Compare that stand-off with the space for your fingers and any nearby door or drawer.

Overall size describes the knob's outer span; projection describes its distance from the cabinet face. Matching a diameter or square size does not make those dimensions interchangeable.

A Stainless Steel finish can still cover a zinc body

The Skylight knob's finish is called Stainless Steel, but its body is zinc. Every knob in this Hickory Hardware selection uses zinc. Choose appearance and base material as separate details rather than interpreting a finish name as construction.

Match screw length to the door or drawer thickness and read the knob's fastening instructions.

Before you buy

Is projection the same as knob diameter?

Projection is how far the knob stands off the cabinet face; overall size is its width or diameter, up to 1 5/8 in on the Piper T-Knob. Face size and projection do not move together: Dover’s face and projection both measure 1 1/4 in. Forge’s face is the Piper maximum below and its projection matches the common projection below.

Is the Stainless Steel knob made of steel?

No. Stainless Steel is the finish name on the Skylight knob, and Hickory Hardware gives zinc as its material, the same as the other nine. From 1 in on the square Crest knob to 1 3/8 in on the Piper T-Knob, with six of the 10 at 1 1/8 in.

What matters when replacing an existing knob?

Screw length, door or drawer thickness and the exact knob’s mounting layout. Use the dimensions on this page to plan the clearance you need around it.
