Line reach and line thickness answer different questions

Known reel lengths range from 23 to 100 ft, but line width is a separate detail. TAJIMA has 100 ft reels with either 0.5 or 1 mm line. Choose enough reach for the span you need to mark, then compare line thickness if the width of the mark matters to your layout. The IRWIN STRAIT-LINE COMPACT Chalk Reel carries 30 ft of line, compared with 100 ft for the STRAIT-LINE SPEEDLINE Chalk Reel. Unsupported line widths stay unknown.

Rewind names do not all describe a gear ratio

The IRWIN STRAIT-LINE SPEEDLINE Chalk Reel uses a 3:1 geared mechanism; the STRAIT-LINE SPEEDLINE PRO Chalk Reel uses a 6:1 geared mechanism. TAJIMA's Five-gear drive is a different description, not a stated numerical ratio. Keep those terms distinct when comparing rewind designs.

Case material can also separate otherwise similar reels: the IRWIN STRAIT-LINE SPEEDLINE Chalk Reel has an ABS case, while the DEWALT Aluminum Chalk Reel has aluminum. These material labels do not measure drop resistance, winding effort or line wear.

Before you buy

Can equal-length reels have different lines?

TAJIMA Dura and II Ultra-Thin each have 100 ft lines. Their widths are 1 mm and 0.5 mm. Missing widths on other reels are not borrowed from these.

Can I compare a five-gear drive with a geared ratio?

The TAJIMA description names a mechanism. IRWIN SPEEDLINE PRO names a 6:1 ratio. Those labels remain distinct rather than converting gear count into a ratio.

Why is the DEWALT Aluminum reel’s length unknown?

DWHT48331 lacks a clear line length in the saved specifications. An active minimum length excludes it; the TOUGHSERIES entry supplies its own length and line width. TAJIMA Auto Wind has a 23 ft line with automatic winding; Chalk-Rite MINI has 50 ft with a five-gear drive. Mechanism changes alongside length. Auto Wind suits you if that shorter line covers the job. MINI offers more reach with a different winding system. Five gears do not establish a 5:1 rewind ratio.
