Fixed or retractable: how does your utility knife lock?
Both take 18 mm blades. OLFA MXP-AL pairs auto lock with aluminum; L-1 pairs ratchet lock with ABS.
Auto-lock holds blade position; it does not mean automatic retraction.

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

An auto-lock label describes holding the blade at its selected position, not automatic retraction. Read the knife's operation and blade-changing directions, and use the compatible replacement blade for that model. The OLFA MXP-AL combines auto lock with a die-cast aluminum handle; XH-AL combines auto lock with fiberglass-reinforced construction.
Lock information is known for 10 products, with 1 unknown. A product's auto-load wording should not be used to fill that gap: loading blades and locking blade position are different features.
Blade width and handle construction are independent choices
OLFA blade widths run from 18 to 25 mm. MXP-AL uses an 18 mm blade; XH-AL uses a 25 mm blade. Narrowing by maximum blade width can therefore remove an auto-lock option without removing all auto-lock knives.
Compare handle material alongside width and lock type. ABS, reinforced fiberglass and die-cast aluminum are different constructions, but these maker descriptions do not measure grip comfort or cutting force. The guide compares blade and handle details without putting the knives through cutting sessions.
Before you buy
Can I choose a wider blade with the same lock category?
OLFA XH-AL takes 25 mm blades with auto lock and a fiberglass-reinforced handle. H-1 uses that wider blade with ratchet lock and an ABS/rubber-inset handle. OLFA MXP-AL and L-1 both take 18 mm blades. MXP-AL uses auto lock in die-cast aluminum; L-1 uses ratchet lock in ABS. The mechanism differs. MXP-AL suits you if you want that handle and lock. L-1 keeps the width with a different mechanism. Choose your handle and lock preference. Auto-lock holds blade position rather than automatic retraction.
Does auto-load establish the lock type?
PL-1’s auto-load description does not establish a lock category in the saved material. Follow the exact blade-extension, locking and retraction instructions and confirm blade compatibility before use.
