How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Flat trimming and hollowing call for different soles

Lie-Nielsen's Convex Sole Block Plane and Model Maker's Block Plane both have a 3.5 in sole and the same blade width, but their soles are convex and flat respectively. The maker descriptions give hollowing as the convex design's intended use; no workshop shavings were cut here. A size match therefore does not make these planes interchangeable for your work.

Rabbet designs bring their blades to the body edge, which is a different decision from sole length. Read the intended use of the particular plane before choosing by dimensions.

Bed angle is not the finished cutting angle

The Lie-Nielsen Convex Sole Block Plane has a 20 degree bed angle, while its Model Maker's Block Plane has a 12 degree bed angle. Those figures describe the blade seat. They do not calculate the cutting angle of your sharpened blade.

The widest blade dimension in this group is 1.75 in. Compare width with the work you intend to reach, then consider the sole profile separately.

Sole lengths for the model-maker designs exclude projecting rear handles; allow for those when judging handling and storage. An unknown sole profile cannot pass a specific profile choice.

Before you buy

Does bed angle give the cutting angle?

Lie-Nielsen’s adjustable-mouth low-angle model has a 12° bed; its No. 9-1/2 has a 20° bed. These blade-seat angles do not calculate cutting angle or prescribe sharpening.

Does the length include a rear handle?

The Model Maker and Convex Sole entries use the stated sole length, excluding projecting handles. Elsewhere the maker’s sole or body label applies. Lie-Nielsen Model Maker has a 3.5 in sole with a 0.88 in blade; its Rabbet has a 6.25 in sole with a 1.75 in blade. You need the appropriate working shape. If a compact flat sole matters, Model Maker is the option to consider. Rabbet reaches the body edge for a different task. The Convex Sole model is for hollowing, rather than interchangeable flat work.

Why is No. 103’s profile unknown?

Its saved page lacks a clear sole-profile value. It remains in the comparison without a profile preference, but cannot satisfy a selected flat or convex category.
