A bit set needs the right shank as well as enough pieces

DEWALT's set sizes span 5 to 29 pieces. Its Black and Gold IMPACT READY Metal Drill Bit Set uses a hex shank, while its Black Oxide sets include flats and less-specific no-spin descriptions. Choose the shank your drill accepts before comparing piece counts. The same count can occur with different shanks, and piece count does not tell you how many distinct hole diameters are supplied.

Material claims need the contents of the selected set

DEWALT's ELITE SERIES Cobalt Alloy Steel PILOT POINT set names stainless steel and hard metals, while other sets name broader wood-and-metal uses. Read the actual diameter list and the instructions for the material you plan to drill. Comparative holes and bit-wear measurements are absent here; the maker descriptions cannot show that every included bit suits every metal. Follow the drill and bit instructions for holding the workpiece and protecting your eyes.

Before you buy

Does a higher piece count mean more hole sizes?

This comparison records DEWALT's piece count, not the diameters included. Three sets have 14 pieces (DW1162, DW1341 and DWA1184), and the DWA1184 has a different shank description from the other two.

What's the difference between black oxide, titanium and cobalt here?

Those are DEWALT's names for the sets, and they line up with its material ratings. The black oxide, Black and Gold and Titanium Speed Tip sets, 10 to 21 pieces between them, are all rated for wood, plastic and metal; the two titanium nitride sets (DD5155, DW1369) name only wood and metal; if you drill stainless, the ELITE SERIES cobalt set is the one rated for it. For an impact driver, the IMPACT READY DWAH1182 and DD5155 are the two DEWALT describes with 1/4-inch hex shanks.

Why do three sets have no shank shape?

DEWALT's pages for the DW1162, DW1341 and DW1369 describe no-spin shanks without saying whether that means flats or a hex. If your chuck or driver needs one or the other, the product photos may be the quickest way to tell.

Does the cobalt set have 3-flats shanks on every bit?

Only on the larger ones, by DEWALT's description: 3-flats shanks on bit sizes 3/16 in and above in the DWAMDCE29SET. The smaller bits might have round shanks or another shape; the page doesn't tell you.
