How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

A narrow joint knife and a broad blade solve different fit problems

Blade widths span 1 to 10 in. The 10" Stainless Steel Joint Knife w/ Soft Grip Handle and the carbon-steel version have the same width, so size alone cannot decide between them. Start with the space you can work in and the width you want to cover, then compare material. The maker's joint-knife classification is retained; a wide blade does not automatically make it a taping knife.

Handle construction deserves a separate decision

These 12 joint knives include soft-grip, welded and composite handle styles. Stainless steel appears with different handles, while carbon steel also appears with soft grip. You can therefore choose grip construction without assuming that it fixes the blade material. Blade spring and comfort through a long session remain unanswered by dimensions and handle descriptions; no compound-spreading sessions inform the comparison. Read each knife's handling and care directions before use.

Before you buy

Is a joint knife just a putty knife?

LEVEL5 seems to use both names for the same tool, so you may meet either one. Every product name here says joint knife, but the browser titles on five pages say putty knife: the 5-146, 5-150, 5-156, 5-403 and 5-504.

Where does a joint knife stop and a taping knife start?

The naming overlaps: LEVEL5 calls welded 5-410 a ‘Taping Joint Knife’ in its page title. This comparison follows the joint-knife product names.

Which handle should I pick?

Handle feel is not measured. Seven knives use soft grips, four use welded handles (5-401, 5-402, 5-403 and 5-410), and 5-504 has the sole composite handle. The 1 in and 1.5 in sizes each offer only one handle. LEVEL5’s carbon steel joint knives are 3, 4 and 10 in wide, all with soft grips; the other nine of the twelve are stainless. Nothing sits between the two larger widths. A minimum above the middle width and no greater than the widest leaves three knives: carbon, stainless or welded stainless.
